A little about Lorgues
Lorgues is a fortified 12th century walled village formerly occupied by the Knights Templar which has expanded and is now able to provide all the facilities and amenities that one would expect of a larger community whilst maintaining a calm atmosphere. There is adequate parking and a magnificent avenue of ancient Platane trees shelter a cinema, shops, pavement cafes and a bustling market (one of the best in Provence) which is held every Tuesday. The countryside surrounding Lorgues is dominated by olive groves, oak and conifer forests and 14 vineyards producing the delicious Cotes de Provence red, white and rose wines.
Lorgues is just a 30min. drive North of the 'La Provencal' (A8) motorway and one hour from Toulon airport, one hour fifteen minutes from Nice airport and one and a half hours from Marseille airport.
"St. Tropez"
Aix ( the City of Fountains, the birthplace and home of Cezanne and the cultural centre of Provence) is only a 75 min. drive away to the West, Avignon is 2 hrs. to the north-west, Grasse, the perfume 'capital' of France is a 90 min. drive to the East. Marseille,90 min's. to the West, is the oldest port in France and whilst still proudly proclaiming its Phoenician, Greek and Roman heritage it has transformed itself into a modern, vibrant, cosmopolitan city well worth a visit. The glitz and glamour of St.Tropez with its yachts and cafes full of 'people watchers' is a 75 min, drive to the South. Frejus, the nearest sea resort is only 45mins. away. Precariously perched hilltop villages (built so for protection against the Saracen invaders of the 9th century) are a feature of the area and are all, without exception, worth a visit to appreciate their tenacious architecture and wonderful views. The Lavender fields of Provence are known the world over and they are to be found 90 min's. to the north-west whilst closer to Lorgues we find the Troglodyte dwellings in Villecroze, the enchanting views at Tourtour, the distinctive Provencal pottery of Salernes, the Trompe l'oeil murals at Carces, and the 12th century Cistercian Abbaye de Thoronet.
